A center of economic activity is the Miami metropolitan area, home to over 5 million people. Your Florida business could involve the tourist trade or related businesses. Miami has become an important financial center as well, functioning as a gateway to South America. The Port of Miami functions as an important point of entry for goods from South America into the United States. On the west coast of Florida, the largest city is Tampa, which including its metropolitan area has a population over 2.7 million. In addition to tourist activity, the nearby Bone Valley is the leading source in the United States of phosphates, which are used in the manufacture of fertilizer. Over the last ten years, both Tampa and the neighboring city of St. Petersburg have become major focuses of the national real estate boom. Tampa-St. Pete has been particularly favored in that the climate is drier than Miami, and there are reportedly 360 days of sunshine per year. Various downtown condominium towers have been built, along with buildings to accommodate a regional banking center, including the 41-story Bank of America tower. South of St. Pete there is Bradenton, Florida, headquarters of Tropicana Products, producer of orange juice and other citrus products, and owned by PepsiCo Corporation. Their corporate headquarters has been relocated, but the juice is still processed in Bradenton.
Florida is still a huge producer of agricultural goods, and a center of food processing. Florida produces about 75-percent of the orange juice produced in the United States as well as over half of the grapefruits and tangerines. Other crops include celery, onions and lettuce, often grown in the Everglades Agricultural area.
