Oregon is a large state on the Northern Pacific coast with over 3.5 million people. It is a heavily farm oriented state, with lots of outdoors tourism and also some major cities. The largest city is Portland, with a metropolitan area population of 2.0 million, including parts of the state of Washington. Other cities are the capital, Salem and Eugene. However, there are significant hi-tech and computer industries in Oregon, things to think about when you start your Oregon Incorporation.
Intel the computer chip maker and semi-conductor company is the largest private employer in the state of Oregon, with 16,000 employees. Intel’s operations have a significant economic impact in Washington County and the rest of the Portland, Oregon area. It has created a large number of high paying jobs. As an Oregon company since 1974, Intel now has seven corporate campuses, and is the producer of 14-percent of the manufactured goods in the Portland Metropolitan area.
Agriculture also plays a big role in Oregon. The Willamette Valley is fertile and even has wine vineyards. Oregon ranks as state number three in wine production. Eastern Washington produces cattle, dairy products, potatoes, hops, and apples and other fruits.
Despite significant setbacks, Oregon is a leading lumber and paper producer. Most of the logging that existed in the state on public lands has been shut down, but activity continues on private lands. Oregon is the leading producer of softwood lumber production with 6 billion board feet produced in Oregon recently.
Recently, biotechnology giant Genentech has announced plans to expand in the Hillsboro area. Hillsboro is a city of 85,000 about 20 miles east of Portland. The company will use the facility for packaging commercial biotechnology therapeutics. The Governor praised the aggressive efforts of the Oregon Economic and Community Development Department (OECDD), the Washington County government, and the City of Hillsboro in paving the way for Genentech’s decision under the Governor’s Certified Industrial Lands Program.
Genentech is the founder of the biotechnology industry. The company uses human genetic information to discover, develop, commercialize and manufacture biotherapies that address significant unmet medical needs. Genentech is a biotechnology manufacturer with the largest proportion of FDA-approved manufacturing capacity for the production of biotech medicines in the world.
Oregon has one of the largest salmon-fishing industries in the world, although ocean fisheries have reduced the river fisheries in recent years. Tourism is also strong in the state; Oregon's evergreen mountain forests, waterfalls, pristine lakes including Crater Lake National Park. Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States. Mt. Hood rises to a height of over 11,000 feet, over the scenic Columbia River. On the slopes of Mt. Hood are four ski areas, including the Timberline Lodge, which dates to 1930s WPA-projects. Mt. Hood and these skiing areas are less than 100 miles from downtown Portland, giving an interesting mix of city and outdoor experiences. The nearby Columbia River Gorge is a favorite spot for whitewater rafting and kayaking. There’s not only the Columbia River, there is also the White Salmon and Klickitat Rivers. Nearby there are places for hiking, biking, golf and downhill and cross country skiing.
