World Cup South Africa 2010
Durban
Home to World Cup 2010, Semi-Finals.
Warm and subtropical, Durban is a fun city with
a population of over 2 million people. It has a
large Indian population, bringing to the city a
vibe unparalleled in South Africa of street
markets and bustling streets.
The new stadium is close to the city, and near to
the humming beachfront with a wall of hotels and
nightlife. A big plus staying in Durban is that
there is a lot to see and do, al being within
easy reach of the City.
For those who enjoy the outdoors, the magnificent
Drakensberg Range of mountains offers a variety
of places to stay, walks and mountain hikes.
If you like to chill on the beach then stay in
the City or explore up and down the South and
North coasts, where even in the winter, you can
catch a tan.
For those historically minded, there is a living
tribute to the battles that took place between
the Zulus and the encroaching enemy to be found
in the north of the province. Wildlife
enthusiasts need travel less than three hours
from Durban to find the African Bush, with
excellent parks like Hluhluwe, Umfolozi and St
Lucia World Heritage site.
Getting to Durban by air from Johannesburg takes
a mere 50 minutes, and there are many direct
flights form international destinations. Shuttles
from the airport are reasonably priced, and take
you to the inner city in 10 minutes.
From there busses run around the city to ferry
you from point to point or pub to pub.
Durban is a sports mad city and locals, who are
very laid back, are easy to talk to about any
topic, and sport is on everyone's mind. Local
pubs and restaurants pump till the early hours of
the morning.
You could do well to end up in Durban if that's
where your team is playing, and join the fun
brigade!
