Honeymoons in South Africa
Now that the wedding is over it's time to sit
back and enjoy a fun filled holiday with your new
husband, and the best thing is that is just the
two of you. South Africa is a fabulous
destination to spend your honeymoon because it
has so much to offer. So if you are a South
African who would rather stay in the country than
trek overseas you will be spoilt for choice of
beautiful places you can spend you honeymoon. And
if you are considering coming to South Africa
from another country there are plenty of reasons
you should. Apart from the vast array of places
to see, South Africa has a great climate and a
favourable exchange rate.
So where does one start? Start researching as
soon as possible, where you want to stay and the
dates you will be leaving and coming back.
Booking six months in advance will ensure access
to the best hotels and tours. You and your
husband should also decide on a theme for the
trip, whether you want to go to a secret secluded
hideaway in the Drakensberg mountains, a beach
getaway or an African bush experience. South
Africa has all these options and more. It is also
important to plan where you want to go according
the time of the year. The South African bush is
extremely hot in the summer months from November
to February, but it is really great for the rest
of the year and especially is spring, before the
rainy season starts and the game and fauna and
flora are out in full force. The Western Cape
experiences its dry season in Summer, so the days
are long and warm and it's a great time to see
the pristine beaches and famed winelands. Kwa-
Zulu Natal is fabulous all year round, with
temperatures remaining in the twenties and
thirties, with the rainy season from November to
February.
There are plenty of online resources about South
Africa so do your homework beforehand. Get
opinions from friends and family if possible, or
else check recommendations online. Check out www.
saweddingvenues.com for our top honeymoon
destinations. The lonely planet is also a great
guide for practical information- from getting
around to money and safety advice. Look for
travel agents who can specifically see to your
honeymoon needs and work out the perfect package
you and your husband are imagining.
After you have decided on where you will be going
in South Africa, check what medication you will
need. The South African Tourism website is a
great online source. South Africa is not a risk
area, and the most you will probably need is
Malaria medication for the Northern bushveld
areas. But be advised to check just in case.
Check with your travel agent what visa you may
need to get into South Africa, and also take the
appropriate measures if you are changing you
Surname. South African passport officials at the
airports can be quite stringent. An added bonus
about coming to South Africa is that nearly all
citizens speak English. Although be advised that
it is South African English so don't panic if at
times you have no idea what people are speaking
about!
Finally buy a great quality camera so you can
capture the splendor of all the places you are
going to be seeing. Also, budgeting for some
occasional splurges is recommended, like eating
at a really fancy, award winning restaurant in
Cape Town, or up grading your hotel suite. It
will be worth it!
